THE state’s hardware and garden centres are bracing for an Easter trade explosion – tipping sales will be double and even triple the usual weekend rate.
While in the heart of the city, hundreds of thousands are expected to turn out for a little Easter retail therapy.
Mitre 10 Glenunga owner Michael Stewart said Easter was typically one of two of his store’s busiest weekends – the other is the October long weekend.
“The Easter long weekend is huge, especially so when the weather Gods line up as they have this year ... we’re expecting we’ll be run off our feet in our painting and gardening departments,” he said.
“We sell more paint over this weekend than any other time of the year ... people have this mindset they want to get any painting done before the winter sets in. For us, Saturday is typically our biggest day, you can have 20 or more people waiting when you open up the doors.”
It’s a similar story at Garden Grove nursery, in Golden Grove, where staff are readying for a hectic few days.
“We find that even a lot of people who go away for Easter come back in time to do some gardening on Monday ... we can experience triple and even quadruple sales compared to a regular weekend day,” nursery manager Steve Neale said.
“This year the weather is forecast to be good, so I think it will be crazy.”
Mr Neale, a 29-year veteran at the nursery, said it was the ideal time to plant and fertilise, and edible gardens were now on trend.
In the CBD, it’s also tipped to be a busy few days.
Adelaide Central Market general manager Aaron Brumby said Easter Saturday was one of five top trading days of the year. The market is open today from 7am to 3pm.
The Rundle Mall Management Authority expects 200,000 shoppers to visit the precinct.
