Interstate and international visitors will get a taste of the state’s finest wine and produce tomorrow, when the first stage of Adelaide Airport’s $165 million expansion opens Wednesday morning.
Headlining a new retail concourse will be the Penfolds Wine Bar and Kitchen, which has been modelled on the iconic Magill Estate venue.
The bar wraps around escalators at the entrance to an expanded international departures area.
An extensive range of the label’s best known varieties will be available by the glass or bottle, including premium Grange and Bin 389 wines.
The Penfolds bar will be joined by a new Boost Juice, Lego Kaboom store, Airport Pharmacy, Soul Origin eatery and Precinct Adelaide Kitchen, which will all start trading opposite gates 15-16 when the terminal opens on Wednesday.
Penfolds has partnered with Emirates Leisure Retail, which operates retail tenancies in airports across the country.
The company’s Australia and New Zealand managing director, Justin Scotti, said the new venue would become a “destination” in the airport, and would create up to 30 new jobs.
“We’ve modelled it on and taken inspiration from Magill Estate,” he said.
“We’ve spent time looking at the experience there, and the cafe style offering will leverage off what they do there.
“Certainly from a menu point of view, we’ll be drawing from local ingredients.”
Adelaide Airport’s terminal expansion includes a complete refurbishment of retail areas, resulting in a more than 80 per cent increase in the overall size of the terminal’s retail and dining precinct across domestic and international areas.
Celebrity chef Callum Hann will open The Pantry later this year, while fellow MasterChef finalist Poh Ling Yeow will open a new Jamface store at the airport early next year. Maggie Beer Kitchen will also open in early 2021.
International upgrades will include a second, longer baggage belt for arrivals, more space for emigration and immigration processing, expanded security screening and a larger duty-free precinct for arrivals and departures.
Virgin Australia will vacate its lounge tomorrow to make way for construction of an expanded facility which will open in April. The airline has set up a temporary pop-up lounge in the new retail precinct.
Adelaide Airport managing director Mark Young said the arrival of local food icons at the airport would deliver an “exciting” experience for travellers.
“We think brands like Penfolds and later Maggie Beer will make Adelaide Airport a destination both for travellers and for South Australians looking for a unique dining and food experience,” he said.
“The presence of iconic South Australian brands as well as the ultimate location of the Vickers Vimy aircraft on the ground floor of the expanded terminal will deliver a real sense of place.”
Over the past week, the offices of airlines and other airport tenants have relocated to new space on the first level of the terminal.
Adelaide Airport will commence demolition of Aviation House, adjacent to the current arrivals and departures halls, in March ahead of the next phase of construction.
