Adult learners who want to break into the coding sphere are being offered an alternative route into the profession through a new course being offered at Adelaide University.

In collaboration with workforce accelerator Trilogy Education, the university will be running the Adelaide Coding Boot Camp for the first time this October.

Graduates of the 24-week, part-time program will learn full-stack web development with a mix of theory and practical application, and leave with a portfolio of work. The course costs $11,500 with a $1000 discount for early payment.

The University’s executive director, executive education, Jeremy Glaros, said there was a lack of skilled workers in the tech field in South Australia, which needed to be addressed.

“There is evidence that this workforce shortfall is negatively impacting South Australia through businesses opting to locate in other states,’’ he said.

Mr Glaros said the program suited people looking to get into the field or further develop their skills, who might not have the time or inclination to embark on a full degree.

“This is the first of a number (of subjects) that we’re considering. We thought web development was the right place to start as it was broad enough and the research suggests there’s a need for it,’’ Mr Glaros said.

In his conversations with businesses it was apparent that there was a skills shortage in SA, and Mr Glaros said he was sure employers would be watching with interest.

One of those will be Adelaide company Comunet, which specialises in digital transformation and tech-strategy.

“As a business at the forefront of technological changes we are thrilled at the growth in the sector,’’ chief executive Alexi Fey said.

“However, there is a shortage of people with relevant tech skills. My frustration in finding good talent is not uncommon amongst the local business community.

“When good talent becomes available, competition is fierce amongst employers to secure talent.”

The course would run for two nights a week and one day each weekend. Mr Glaros said students would also be supported with career advice.

Trilogy Education chief executive Dan Sommer said SA’s skills shortage would only worsen without proactive measures such as the boot camp.

“Adelaide’s continued transformation into a high-tech hub of digital activity has left employers with insufficient talent to meet critical business needs,” Mr Sommer said.

The boot camp will give participants the knowledge and skills to build “dynamic end-to-end web applications and become a full stack web developer’’ the University says.

“No previous training or experience is required, although an understanding of coding basics is recommended. In addition to classroom instruction, students have access to a range of career-planning services.’’

Students will receive a Certificate in Full-Stack Web Development from the University of Adelaide.
