$40 million, six-storey Victor Harbor hotel next to Anchorage landmark gets green light

A $40 million, six-storey hotel that also features a footbridge over the SteamRanger railway track has been approved for Victor Harbor, providing a jobs windfall for the South Coast.

Work will begin next year on a $40 million, six-storey hotel overlooking Victor Harbor’s coastline, after the project won development approval.

The Anchorage Victor Harbor, on Flinders Pde, will feature 122 rooms and five two-storey penthouses and a conference area. It will be connected with a multistorey, 266-space carpark by a footbridge over the SteamRanger railway track.

Developer Greg Phillips, who owns the heritage-listed Anchorage Hotel next door, said apart from cutting four hotel rooms to reduce its impact on the existing landmark, few other changes were needed to win the backing of Victor Harbor’s development panel.

Construction work on the four-and-a-half star hotel will start in the second half of next year and take about 18 months to complete.

Mr Phillips said the hotel would spark a “massive change” in the way the town did business, as it would bring tourists to the region year-round.

“By doing a deal with the largest hotel group in the world, they class it as a destination hotel,” Mr Phillips said.

“It will get people down there during the colder months.”
Mr Phillips said it would also attract interstate and international tourists to stay on the South Coast for extended periods, rather than bedding down in Adelaide’s higher-end accommodation and doing day trips.

The existing hotel will be upgraded with a new bar and dining areas, while the new building will feature penthouses, hotel rooms and a function area over six storeys and a mezzanine level.

Business Victor Harbor chairman Nick Gormley agreed the project was a “game changer” for the region and would have huge flow-on benefits for the town’s businesses.

He said the project, along with Victor’s new $60 million Bunnings and Coles complex, completed last year, demonstrated the opportunities available in the region.

The association’s deputy-chairman Mark Richards said it would have “fantastic” flow-on effects for other local industries such as hospitality and construction.

“If you look back about 20 or 25 years on the Fleurieu a four or four-and-a-half star hotel was identified as a critical piece of infrastructure,” Mr Richards said.

The development’s multi-deck carpark will feature 80 spaces dedicated to the hotel, but the rest will be available to address a lack of spaces in the area.

The project will create 217 jobs during construction and 112 full-time equivalent roles once the build is complete.
