Pelligra Group has lodged plans for a $20m ice rink and indoor rock climbing development at Marion, with the project expected to go out for community consultation early next year.
Property magnate Ross Pelligra’s company last year announced plans to development ice skating facilities at both Marion and at Elizabeth, with the group reaching agreement with Marion Council on a long-term lease over land currently occupied by the Marion Croquet Club.
The plans for the ice rink, at 262a Sturt Rd, Marion, include a single-rink arena with seating for up to 450 spectators, and three rock climbing walls of varying difficulty.
An above-ground car park is also proposed as part of the project.
Marion mayor Kris Hanna said it was good to see the project progress.
“Council supports the concept of a local ice rink, but it must now be assessed by the independent Council Assessment Panel,’’ Mr Hanna said.
“We expect the design to be made public for community comment early in 2024.”
The application will also require a public notification process, which will include formal notification to all occupants within 60m of the development site.
The designs have been scaled back from an original, two rink proposal first put to the council in 2018.
“Ice sports and rock climbing are incredibly exciting activities for both participants and spectators and we look forward to being part of that community,” Mr Pelligra said when first announcing the project last year.
Pelligra Group is also seeking planning consent for its Elizabeth multi-sports facility in the Playford City Council area, where it hopes to start construction next year.
That project, at the southern corner of Main North Rd and Philip Highway, would include an indoor ice sports arena, a rock-climbing facility, two indoor sports courts, a gymnasium and a restaurant.
Mr Pelligra, who is based in Melbourne, has amassed a large portfolio of assets since purchasing the former Holden site at Elizabeth in 2017, which he has since developed into the Lionsgate business hub.
Earlier this year he bought women’s basketball team Adelaide Lightning, and also owns the Adelaide Giants baseball team.
Marion Council said the Department for Infrastructure and Transport would also assess the Sturt Rd proposal and consider whether the expected increase in traffic volumes and movements was appropriate.
The Marion project will not require an investment from the council.
