The Mid-North is set to get its biggest tiny house yet as part of a $300,000 project boosting tourism in the region.
The new AirBnb accommodation will join two existing tiny houses at the picturesque Lake Bumbunga in Lochiel and will be the largest and most luxurious according to owners Michael and Christina Seeliger.
“It’s so big that it’s at the absolute limits of what’s towable. Our specialty is tiny houses on wheels,” Mr Seeliger said.
In July last year the Seeligers opened the Pink Lake Tiny House at the lake as well as the smaller Dandelion Retreat tiny house for couples.
The pair’s $304k project is being aided by a $91,489 grant from the South Australian Tourism Commission in response to the growing popularity of tiny house accommodation worldwide.
While the houses are connected to main power and water as a backup, Mr Seeliger said all of the houses are designed to exist off the grid and to be entirely self-sufficient.
“They have incredibly small carbon footprints with solar panels, batteries and bio composting toilets so for anyone interested in that technology it's a great experience to stay here,” Mr Seeliger said.
“We only had to connect them to mains as a last resort where guests absolutely flog the power and run out.”
As part of the overall project, the couple will also build two ‘glamping’ style bell tents near the lake by September, with a shift to local tourism fuelling the expansion.
“We were previously focused on international travellers, but when the borders closed down we had no business, we’ve been able to pivot to the local market with these tiny houses and people have loved it.”
