Fancy owning your own island?
Well here’s your chance to pick up not only one, but three islands in the Coorong which are up for sale after more than 100 years in the same family’s hands.
The three islands stretch across more than 1900ha and are currently home to Mundoo Island Station – a working cattle and sheep station run by the Grundy family.
The station was first established in 1843, with the Grundys acquiring a half-share in 1922 and later taking full ownership in 1932.
The largest of the three islands – Mundoo Island, just east of Hindmarsh Island – covers 1197ha.
Ewe and Long islands, which cover an additional 710ha, complete the trio, and are currently held under a perpetual lease.
Owner Sally Grundy declined to comment on the sale, referring inquiries to selling agents Tim Altschwager and Jesse Manuel from Colliers.
They said the islands represented a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to “protect and enhance this delicate ecosystem”, and could also suit a range of potential eco-friendly developments such as eco-lodges, birdwatching stations and sustainable retreats.
“Mundoo Island, Ewe Island, and Long Island represent unparalleled opportunities for eco-tourism, natural capital investment and responsible development,” Mr Altschwager said.
“Mundoo Island is anticipated to attract a diverse range of buyers, including established farming groups seeking to incorporate eco-conscious practices, environmental organisations focused on conservation, investors interested in natural capital ventures, and government agencies dedicated to protecting vulnerable ecological areas.
“We’ve already had quite a bit of interest from different parties – people interested in the environmental side of it, land banker types and high net worths as well. It will definitely stir up a variety of buyers – everyone’s going to be intrigued with it.”
The three islands are located at the mouth of the River Murray, and form part of the
UNESCO-designated Ramsar wetlands area due to their biodiversity and conservation importance.
The region is renowned for its freshwater and saltwater ecosystems, and is a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife.
Several dwellings and shacks are located across the Mundoo Island network of islands, which have also been used for farm stays, camping and photography and birdwatching tours.
Access to Mundoo Island is provided via the Mundoo Barrage from Hindmarsh Island.
Mr Altschwager declined to provide a price estimate for the islands, given its “unique” offering which was likely to attract wide and varied interest.
