Construction of a new $10m cellar door, restaurant and function centre at Mt Jagged Wines will commence next year after the project secured planning approval from the Alexandrina Council.

Designed by local Adelaide architects Arc Two, the development will feature 900sq m of space across three levels, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, an elevated viewing area, 75-seat restaurant and outdoor seating areas.

It will replace the existing cellar door at the 59ha property on Victor Harbor Rd in Mt Jagged – located around 30km south of McLaren Vale and 18km north of Victor Harbor.

Arc Two director Martino Collicelli said the luxury development would drive tourism to the Fleurieu Peninsula and would become a new landmark venue for the region.

“This grand cellar door is a true testament to the harmonious relationship between built structures and their environment,” he said.

“We wanted this landmark to seamlessly blend with its natural hilly surroundings. The use of soft curves and floor-to-ceiling windows invite the outside world in and provides panoramic views of rolling hills and lush vineyards.

“We wanted to create a world class luxury cellar door where international visitors and locals could appreciate the beauty of Mt Jagged.”

Construction is expected to commence in the middle of next year.

The first vineyard at the Mt Jagged property was planted in 1989, and it now includes plantings of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, chardonnay and semillon.

The winery was acquired in 2019 by current owner AZ Global – a major distributor of Australian products to China, including baby formula brands Bubs, Bellamy’s and Aptamil, and vitamin and supplement products made by Swisse.

It is backed by Malaysian billionaire Lee Ming Tee, whose Hong Kong-listed property investment company Allied Group is one of the largest exporters of Australian and New Zealand brands to China.

Mr Lee is also the founder of Mulpha, a Malaysian real estate investor and developer that controls around $2bn of assets. Its property holdings include the InterContinental Hotels in Sydney and Hayman Island, and several other properties in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and the UK.
