Australian dollar lower after weak Chinese, local data

THE Australian dollar is lower on the back of weaker-than-expected local and Chinese data.

THE Australian dollar is lower on the back of weaker-than-expected local and Chinese data.

At 0630 AEST on Tuesday, the local currency was trading at 92.75 US cents, down from 92.80 cents on Monday.

Data on Monday showed approvals for the construction of new homes across Australia fell 3.5 per cent in March, weaker than economists' expectations of a 1.5 per cent rise.

The HSBC Chinese manufacturing purchasing managers' index also disappointed on Monday, falling two points to 48.1 in April.
