A nature and sensory-based playground is the centrepiece of a new 10,000sq m community park opened at the $1.2 billion Liberty housing development in Adelaide’s north.

The new community space, named Freedom Park, will entertain the booming population in Two Wells, where Liberty and sister project Eden will deliver more than 3000 new homes over the next two decades.

Offering more than 10,000sq m of community space, the rural-themed park features a giant chessboard, table tennis table, BBQs, shelters, walking trails and open spaces.

A nature-based playground includes a giant treehouse, windmill, climbing frames, water play, sandpit, barnyard play equipment and slides.

Hickinbotham Group’s Land Australia is behind the Liberty and Eden projects, where close to 200 families have relocated to.

The new neighbourhood is also home to Xavier College’s new Two Wells campus, which welcomed its first students earlier this year.

Hickinbotham Group managing director Michael Hickinbotham said the new park would support the “thriving” community that was being created.

“As well as providing a great place for families to live, we want to provide a great place for families to play,” he said.

“We have adopted leading-edge concepts in nature and sensory play stemming from Professor Fraser Mustard, who was a former thinker in residence in South Australia.

“His whole field of endeavour was for kids being able to learn through play. Kids need to learn to take intelligent and measured risks and this is a wonderful place to start.”

Rachel Pooley, who recently visited Freedom Park with children Maya, 6, Cleo, 4, and Hugo, 1, said the neighbourhood was attracting lots of families.

“Many young families at the same life stage as us have moved into the community and it’s great to have facilities so close where our children can make friends,” she said.

Planning Minister Vickie Chapman, who officially opened Freedom Park this week, said the housing development was supporting strong population growth in the region.

“More people are choosing to live, work and raise a family in Adelaide. Projects like Liberty and Eden will support this government’s vision, while supporting thousands of local jobs,” she said.
