LUXURY “glampers” will sleep in tents on the old Royal Adelaide Hospital’s helipad from later this year in a bid to “activate” the site during its redevelopment.
Called St Jerome’s The Hotel Adelaide, the rooftop accommodation and bar will feature fourteen 6m by 4m canvas bell tents, complete with reverse cycle airconditioning to ward off the elements.
The concept is based on tents atop the Melbourne Central building, which has been rated as one of the nation’s finest hotels for glamping, or glamour camping.
The old RAH plan is being touted as offering a unique, premium style of accommodation with panoramic views of the Adelaide skyline.
Urban Development Minister Stephen Mullighan said talks were continuing on the old RAH’s redevelopment, which would be one of the largest projects of its type in the state.
“In the meantime we are getting on with activating the site to bring new life and economic activity to the East End as soon as possible,” he said.
“We want to make sure that this significant city location won’t simply be locked up behind hoardings during demolition and construction.”
Hotel founder Jerome Borazio said financial details were still being worked out but up to 75 people would be employed in construction and operation.
“I’m hoping to get support from the locals but, at the moment, it’s about opening Adelaide up to those people who haven’t necessarily put it at the top of their visits’ list,” he said.
About one-third of the Melbourne hotel’s visitors are from interstate, a quarter from overseas and the remainder locals.
