Five Guys to open Adelaide outlet in Australia-wide push

Fastfood chain Five Guys will arrive in Adelaide as early as next year as part of a big push into Australia.

The ultimate burger taste test

Cult US burger chain Five Guys will open a restaurant in Adelaide as early as next year as part of a rollout of outlets across the country.

Famous for its freshly made burgers and milkshakes topped with crumbled apple wood-smoked bacon, the popular chain has more than 1500 restaurants around the world, and will open its first Australian venue in Penrith later this year.

Seagrass Boutique Hospitality Group, which has the franchise rights for Australia and New Zealand, has plans to open around 10 Five Guys outlets across the region, with Adelaide on its list of favoured locations.

Seagrass chief executive Bradley Michael said Adelaide could welcome its first Five Guys venue as early as next year.

“We have Penrith this year, the next one is Melbourne and then Queensland, Perth and Adelaide – within 18 months or two years we’ll be in Adelaide,” he said.

“The thing about Five Guys is that you need to find a baker in each region that can bake the rolls fresh, because everything is brought in and made fresh on the same day – the rolls are fresh, the fries are fresh, they don’t have any freezers in any stores.

“I think that type of burger they do, the old fashioned American burger, will do really well in Australia.”

Five Guys was founded in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrell in Arlington, Virginia. The original “Five Guys” comprised Jerry and sons Jim, Matt, Chad and Ben.

As well as its selection of freshly made burgers, the menu offers a selection of fries, hot dogs, sandwiches and milkshakes.

Seagrass secured the Australia and New Zealand master franchise for Five Guys last year.

“I’m not a master franchise agreement guy but when I met with the family that owns Five Guys, after meeting them and getting an understanding of their values and ethos, they were very similar to mine – their passion for people and food and a quality product,” Mr Michael Said.

Seagrass, which operates more than 40 restaurants in Australia, will open its first Adelaide restaurant next month.

The company is putting the finishing touches to a new Meat & Wine Co steakhouse in Elder House on Currie Street in the CBD.

It forms part of a multimillion-dollar transformation of heritage building, which will include a retail and hospitality arcade linking the building’s Currie St entrance with the Anster St laneway at its rear.

Mr Michael said he was confident the hospitality sector would bounce back from the affects of COVID-19.

“In the beginning it had a massive impact because everybody was unsure of what the future was going to be like,” he said.

“But people are social, they need to socialise, and if they feel like they’re in a safe environment, the place is clean and there’s a professional approach, then people will come – if you’re serving good food people will come.”
