Man takes ‘embarrassing’ $2000, 500km Uber trip after drunken university party

WE’VE all made mistakes after a big night out. But as far as drunken mishaps go, this guy’s epic Uber ride takes the cake.

Uber vs Taxis: which is better?

A BIG night out with old friends has proved very costly for one man in the United States.

Kenny Bachman, from New Jersey, was visiting friends at their university in West Virginia last week — almost 500km away from his home town.

The group attended a fraternity party together, and after many hours of heavy drinking, Mr Bachman decided to call it a night and do the sensible thing — by ordering an Uber.

His mistake? Instead of telling his driver to take him to his nearby accommodation, he asked the man to take him “home” — to New Jersey.

Mr Bachman told CBS Philly he had “blacked out” soon after getting into the car.

He woke up many hours later to discover he was almost at his home town.

“We went to a frat party and then went to the bar,” he told the program.

“I was getting drinks all night; I probably spent like $US200 ($AU257) at the bar after already drinking all day.

“Basically, I kinda just blacked out. The last thing I remember was being at the bar and then I just woke up in the Uber next to an older dude telling me I was an hour out from Jersey.”

Mr Bachman said when he woke up in the car he did not know where he was — or how he got there.

“I was just like … ‘That’s crazy. Like, why did you agree to, like, take me to New Jersey from West Virginia?’” he told reporters.

As you would expect, a five-hour, 500km Uber trip doesn’t come cheap — Mr Bachman was charged around $US1600 ($AU2062) for the ride.

He told media the trip was even pricier as he had accidentally ordered an UberXL instead of a standard Uber, and that he had also paid the driver for tolls.

“I guess it’s kind of embarrassing,” he told the station, adding he had given the driver five stars.

The worst part? Mr Bachman will be heading back to West Virginia again this weekend, to pick up his bags he left behind during his last visit.

Uber reached out to Mr Bachman after the disastrous night out, but the man agreed to pay for the ride.

But Mr Bachman is not the first passenger to take such an epic journey using the ride-sharing service.

Last year, three Chinese professionals hired one to travel more than 1050km from Dallas to Nashville in the US when their connecting flight was cancelled.

The price of that drive is unknown — although the trip took an impressive 11 hours.
