Lisa Wilkinson and Peter FitzSimons’ young journalist daughter is following in their famous footsteps, after scoring a plum role as an editor.
Like her mum, Billi FitzSimons has had a quick rise to the top of an Australian publication.
Lisa was made the editor of Dolly magazine at the age of 21, and her daughter is not far behind, scoring a coveted role at 24.
Last week she announced she was the editor of the “social media first” publication, The Daily Aus.
Billi’s career in journalism started when she was appointed as an editorial assistant at Mamamia in 2018 before securing a role as a news writer 18 months later.
Mamamia was created by media stalwart Mia Freedman, and Wilkinson famously hired Freedman as an intern at Dolly magazine 30 years earlier.
Just five months after that promotion, Billi FitzSimons was again promoted to senior news writer before leaving that role and joining The Daily Aus as a political journalist in 2021.
The initial move to The Daily Aus was celebrated by her mother in a tweet published on August 30.
“Very proud,” she wrote.
“And their Insta account is particularly good for quick hits of daily news.”
Last week, Billi announced she would be moving into the editor position. She had previously hosted a podcast for the publication titled Young, Dumb and Informed.
The Daily Aus was founded by lawyer and journalist Sam Koslowski and former political staffer and journalist Zara Seidler.
It posts explainers of current news stories on its platforms as well as producing original content and podcasts. It brands itself as “accessible news for young Aussies”.
Earlier this month, Billi‘s father, Nine Newspapers columnist Peter FitzSimons, was slapped down for comments made about Alan Jones on Twitter.
Channel 7 entertainment reporter Peter Ford had a go at FitzSimons after he posted a seemingly insincere message “worrying” about Jones — who has been absent from his online series Alan Jones Direct To The People for months.
Ford pointed out the veteran broadcaster has been recovering from painful surgery.
It comes after Jones disappeared from the airwaves in December despite declaring he’d “be everywhere” when he first launched his new online TV show with Australian Digital Holdings.
“I am starting to get worried. WHERE IS JONESY?,” FitzSimons posted of his absence since Christmas 2021.
