Mining giant Rio Tinto has appointed Simon Trott as its new chief executive, following the surprise resignation of Jakob Stausholm in May.
Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Tuesday, July 15. The ASX 200 index rose 0.7 per cent to 8630.3 points, with most sectors up, led by technology and health care sectors.
Wall Street's major indexes eked out gains as US President Donald Trump remained open to trade deals while issuing new threats. The S&P 500 closed 0.1 per cent higher, the Dow Jones gained 0.2 per cent and the technology-focused Nasdaq notched a new record after rising 0.3 per cent.
Cryptocurrency giant bitcoin is trading near $US116,500 - after hitting an all-time high of $US122,873.45, according to Coindesk data.
The Aussie dollar is trading around US65.46c.
