More than a decade after plans to redevelop Coles at Norwood were first floated by the supermarket giant, a revamped store on The Parade has finally opened its doors.
The multimillion-dollar redevelopment was unveiled to the public for the first time on Wednesday after two and half years of construction.
Customers are able to squeeze their own orange juice, pick up freshly baked flatbread and sourdough, and help themselves to a self-serve pet treat bar for their furry friends as part of a new convenience-based offering designed to compete head on with Foodland across the road.
Coles Norwood store manager Daniel Gobbo said the new supermarket would employ about 160 retail workers.
“Throughout my time with Coles, I have progressed from managing the deli to now helping open a brand-new store in Norwood. It has been rewarding to be able to provide more than 160 new jobs with 20 entering the workforce for the very first time,” he said.
“After two-and-a-half years without a Coles in the area, we are thankful that the community is so excited to welcome us back — the team cannot wait to open the doors and invite customers in.
“This will be the newest metro store in Adelaide, which includes a fresh fit-out not yet seen in South Australia.”
Other features of the new layout include a patisserie fridge and frozen dessert bar serving a range of mochi, mini gelato and macaroons, and grab-n-go sandwiches, salads and ready-made meals adding to the convenience theme.
Sustainability considerations also formed part of the design of the new store, with Coles partnering with local Adelaide company Glaciem Cooling Technologies to introduce new refrigeration technologies designed to reduce the store’s carbon emissions.
A new Liquorland store is also part of the new retail offering, which forms part of the wider $120m COMO apartment and townhouse development rising above the Norwood Mall site.
Other retailers set for the precinct include a sister venue to Hutt St patisserie Mascavado, a Thomas Farms meat and seafood store and Boost Juice.
Coles first discussed an upgrade of its Norwood supermarket and the wider Norwood Mall precinct in 2011, later lodging plans for a $50m overhaul in 2013.
However after a series of delays it sold the site to local developer Australasian Property Developments, which is putting the finishing touches to the COMO project.
