Two big name international fashion brands will open new stores at Burnside Village in the coming weeks in a sign of renewed confidence in the state’s retail sector.

Hugo Boss will open a new flagship store on the corner opposite the new Seed Heritage outlet early next year, after closing its CBD store on Grenfell Street last year.

That will follow the opening of a new Polo Ralph Lauren store before Christmas, with the US fashion brand to open next to Mimco.

By early next month footwear brand Tony Bianco will also have set up shop at Burnside, opening in a shopfront opposite Mecca in Burnside’s Vine Mall.

The new arrivals follow the opening of Seed Heritage’s new two-level flagship store in the former French Connection space.

Burnside Village, which is owned by local property company Cohen Group, was recently ranked as Australia’s number two performing shopping centre by sales in the annual Shopping Centre News 2020 Mini Guns category.

Mini Guns are shopping centres which span 6000sq m to 20,000sq m of store space.

Cohen Group chief executive John Blunt said confidence was returning to the retail sector in the wake of COVID-19.

“Burnside Village had recovered strongly since June with total centre traffic close to prior year levels and sales higher than 2019,” he said.

Colliers International SA head of retail leasing Ben Laycock, who negotiated the deals with the new Burnside brands, said retailers were showing renewed confidence in the market as foot traffic improved across Adelaide’s shopping centres and retail strips.

“Having closed their city store in January 2019, Hugo Boss are thrilled to bring their latest fit-out and their full men’s and ladies’ suit and fashion range to Burnside Village,” he said.

“Scanlan Theodore, one of Burnside Village’s top performing fashion stores, have also shown confidence in the centre by extending their current lease.

“Meanwhile a new lease to Lorna Jane signals the strength of the ladies active leisure wear category, joining the highly successful Lululemon store at the centre.”

Burnside Village recently undertook a refurbishment of its Village Market, with Sushi Hub, Mr Cheese, Dumpling Lab and Chi Body Spirit all taking up space in the food-based area.

“In addition, existing popular retailers Haydon’s Butcher, the Village Bakery and Let Them Eat have all recommitted to longer-term leases and undertaken new fit-outs, and Tony & Mark’s will expand their store and offering,” Mr Laycock said.

Cohen Group maintained that it would develop the adjacent 10,000sq m of vacant land “once there is more certainty with economic conditions”.

The $360m project was put on hold earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
