The Kidman Park Scout Group says the sound and smell of more than 600 sausages sizzling outside the Bunnings Adelaide Airport store for the first time ever on Saturday will do more than raise funds.

“We hope it will also bring back to the community a sense of returning normalcy, of being sociable and of finding joy in supporting local causes,” the group’s fundraising co-ordinator Kate Mazza said.

Saturday marks the return of the community fundraising favourite for about 40 groups and clubs across 17 Bunnings hardware stores in South Australia, after the suspension of sizzles in March to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Kidman Scout Group’s 9am-4pm sausage sizzle is the first for the Bunnings store, which opened in April.

“We had scheduled a fundraiser in April for camp gear for our Cubs, Joeys and Scouts.

“When we got the call from Bunnings about the return of sausage sizzles, it was just a matter of rallying the troops to gear up for it.

“Our order for 60 kgs of sausages from our local butcher Baa Moo Oink is placed and the house is full of sauce.

“It’s wonderful to see everyone getting behind us with donations of onions, tissues and time,” said Ms Mazza, whose children Bailey, 7, and Lewis 11, are part of the scouts group, which runs activities and camps for kids aged six years and older.

“It is exciting to be doing this again and I can’t wait to get my sausage on Saturday,” Bailey said.

There are new safety measures in place including the use of sanitisers, card readers for payments and a roster of volunteers across the day along with social distancing measures.

Other community groups booked for the first weekend include the Rotary, Royal Flying Doctor, Men’s Sheds, Scouts, Lions and other local sporting clubs.

Typically, about 40,000 sausage sizzles are run each year at Bunnings through local community groups, raising much needed funds.

A community report on Bunnings’ website says the sizzles raised over $38 million for groups nationally in 2019.

The Kidman Park Scout Group has raised nearly $8000, excluding expenses, through sales of the $2.50 sausages and $1.50 drink cans four times a year.

Bunnings, which provided safety training for group co-ordinators ahead of the fundraisers, said community groups are taking a number of extra precautions.
