With tourism as one of the hardest-hit sectors due to COVID-19, opening a new Sofitel hotel has been dubbed a ‘dream come true’ for the local economy.
Premier Steven Marshall said the new $140 million complex created more than 1100 construction jobs and would create ongoing work when the doors open mid-next year.
He said he was hopeful the state would be open to international travellers at that time.
“We need to be ready for the bounce-out the other side so to have the Sofitel in Adelaide is a dream come true,” Mr Marshall said.
“Most importantly, out the other side is a fantastic new experience to bring people firstly from interstate then ultimately from overseas.
“We’re confident we’ll work towards a time where we can attract and invite guest from around the world to come back to Adelaide and we need to have those preparations in place.”
The 32-storey, French-inspired hotel, located on Currie St, will be the first 5-star hotel built in Adelaide’s CBD in 30 years.
It will feature four food and drink venues, a pool, gym and a Sofitel club lounge and will have 251 hotel rooms and 69 luxury apartments situated on the top eight floors.
The building will be the fourth-tallest in Adelaide.
Construction is expected to finish in December and is being developed by South Australian company Palumbo.
All apartments have already sold, apart from one three-bedroom flat.
Sofitel hotels and resorts known for their French style and was the first international luxury hotel brand to originate from France.
It now has almost 120 hotels globally.
