An NRL player accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Brisbane will be heading to mediation, a court has been told.
The footballer did not appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday before magistrate Belinda Merrin.
NCA NewsWire is not able to name the man under Queensland laws prohibiting the identification of people charged with sexual assault offences before they’re committed to a higher court.
He has been charged with one count of sexual assault after an alleged incident in a Brisbane nightclub in December last year.
The court was told an application for justice mediation had been accepted by the police prosecutor and the complainant, who cannot be named.
Justice mediation can only occur if the complainant has agreed to it and the defendant intends to take responsibility for his actions.
Ms Merrin adjourned the matter for further mention to April 12.
She said she allowed the adjournment “in case the justice mediation isn’t successful”.
The court was told the Director of Public Prosecutions was likely to transfer the matter to its office if mediation was unsuccessful, with an application expected to revisited in April.
The man remains on bail.
