The head honcho of the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang has been booked by police on a traffic charge.

Toby Mitchell did not appear in a virtual sitting of the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday but left it to his lawyer Theo Magazis to do the talking.

He is charged with failing to obey a one-way sign on Fawkner Street in Southbank on November 30 last year.

Mr Magazis told the court the charge would be disputed because there was “no other way” Mitchell could go down the street.

He said Mitchell was exiting a building car park into a street with construction that prevented him driving in the correct direction.

He will next appear in court for the traffic charge on September 17 and is due to be sentenced on another matter on September 9.

He was ordered in February to undergo anger management counselling before being sentenced on two counts of unlawful assault.

Mitchell is a former senior member of rival bikie gang the Bandidos until he defected to the Mongols in about 2019 and later became president.

He was shot five times in 2011 and survived after extensive surgeries. He was shot and survived again two years later.
