Cement mixer truck rolls on Melbourne’s Peninsula Link near the Golf Links Road entry

A massive traffic jam has built up on a city freeway after a cement mixer truck rolled over and forced officials to shut down an entire roadway.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A cement mixer tipped over on a Melbourne freeway, creating a traffic jam that has lasted for hours.

Shortly before 5pm on Monday, motorists were being redirected from the crash site on a southbound lane of the Peninsula Link near the Golf Links Road entry.

Police were diverting rush-hour drivers going south on Peninsula Link to alternative routes on Golf Links Road through Fulton Road or the Moorooduc Highway.

Ambulance Victoria checked up on a person at the scene, but they were unharmed and didn’t require hospitalisation, a spokeswoman said.

VicTraffic first updated motorists on the situation around 2pm on Monday, saying the truck had rolled over.

Emergency workers initially shut down just the left lane as they tried to remove the wreck.

“Please be patient and merge early for everyone‘s safety,” VicTraffic tweeted.

But around 2.30pm the agency said the entire southbound road was closed.

“Peninsula Link is now closed southbound at Golf Links Road, due to a truck rollover,” a Twitter message from VicTraffic read.

“Follow the direction of police. Use Golf Links Road, Fultons Road, Baxter-Tooradin Road and you can return to the freeway via Frankston-Flinders Road.”

Aerial photographs from the scene show a long line of cars queuing on the freeway.

Another picture posted by VicTraffic showed the truck on its side.
