About 100 cars found at hoon meet in Melbourne’s southeast

Police have broken up a dangerous hoon meet in Melbourne’s southeast involving about 100 cars performing burnouts close to pedestrians and other motorists.

Three men, including a P-plater, are expected to be charged after police broke up a hoon meet of about 100 cars in Melbourne’s southeast overnight.

Police were called to Frankston Gardens Industrial Estate in Carrum Downs at 10.50pm on Monday after reports about 100 cars had gathered.

Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said vehicles at the meet were engaged in high-risk driving behaviour and performing burnouts in proximity to pedestrians and other motorists.

The meet was broken up when police officers and the air wing arrived, with participants and onlookers quickly dispersing from the industrial estate.

Sergeant Newman said police intercepted three drivers in the surrounding area with the help of the air wing as they tried to flee from the meet.

One driver, an 18-year-old man, was allegedly detected travelling at 160km/h in an 90km/h zone as he tried to get away.

His Holden Commodore ute was impounded, and he is expected to be charged with driving at a speed dangerous and exceeding the speed limit.

A second driver, who allegedly provided a positive oral fluid test for drugs, is expected to be charged with driving in a manner dangerous, improperly using a motor vehicle, careless driving and using an unroadworthy vehicle.

His 2002 Holden Commodore sedan was also impounded for 30 days.

A third man was pulled over on Hall Road for driving an unroadworthy Holden Commodore sedan, failing to display P-plates and not carrying his licence.

The trio are expected to be charged on summons to face court at a later date.
