100 Years of Untold Stories: Submission FAQs

FREQUENTLY Asked Questions for people wishing to submit their own military service experiences to the 100 Years of Untold Stories project.

What sort of material qualifies?

We’d be happy to take a look at anything you/your relative created during their service. Diaries, letters home, photographs, drawings, social media (eg; Facebook, Instagram) feeds, videos … anything that tells the story of your/their experience.

Are any conflicts or service not included?

No. We’d be happy to consider material from any military theatre from WWI onwards, including Peace Keeping efforts such as East Timor and military disaster relief such as the Boxing Day Tsunami.

What will happen to it?

That depends on your wishes. With your permission News Corp Australia would like to publish the most interesting material as part of our 100 Years of Untold Stories: Anzac to Afghanistan on our websites and in our newspapers. There are examples of how we would do this already on our special sections on our metropolitan and regional news websites.

Then we can return the material to you, or if you prefer we can pass it on to the Australian War Memorial for them to consider adding to their collection. Details of donating to the AWM can be found here. It will be up to the AWM to decide if it will accept the material. If it is not accepted it will be returned to you.

What if I don’t want it published?

That’s fine too. If you prefer we are happy to pass the material straight to the Australian War Memorial.

What material can I provide?

We will consider any material you provide in which you either own the copyright or are permitted by the copyright owner to give to us for use in 100 Years of Untold Stories: Anzac to Afghanistan.

Would I still own the material?

That depends on what happens to it. If you pass it on to us for publication then yes, you would still own it and we would simply be publishing extracts from it with your permission. Once material is donated to the Australian War Memorial, however, the AWM would seek to obtain the copyright.

We have no role in any copyright arrangements made between you and the AWM.

According to the AWM’s fact sheet:  “Where items are covered by copyright, the Memorial seeks that copyright; the transfer of copyright should be considered as part of the donation process. Usually we wish to examine the item or items before making a final decision.”
