Anzac website a tribute to family hero

PAUL Hutchins had extra motivation when designing the Tasmanian Centenary of Anzac website.

Mr Hutchins is a descendant of World War I Victoria Cross recipient J.J. Dwyer.

“I am the graphic designer for the Department of Premier and Cabinet and it’s just by chance that my great grandfather had won a VC,” he said. “He died in 1962, but my grandmother was full of stories about him.

“He took out a whole German infantry unit and captured their machinegun. He was just all about looking after his own men.”

The Centenary of Anzac website will allow members of the public to log on to share their stories and photographs of family members who have served in the military.

“We’ve found that there are a lot of untold stories and a lot of photos that have never been seen,” project officer Samantha Davis said.

Ms Davis encouraged people holding a community event for the centenary to register it so it could be promoted on the calendar.
